In 1839, William Davis Merry Howard, the son of a shipping magnate from Hillsboro, New Hampshire, came to California as a cabin boy. Convinced there were fortunes to be made here, Howard would eventually settle in Hillsborough and build a large estate much like the ones for which the city is known today.

Hillsborough was incorporated in 1910 — a “perfumed city,” as one newspaper reported — that, to this day, continues to attract some of the Bay Area’s most affluent families.
